An Interview with Jack Croxall

Jack Croxall - Author Photo PortraitRecently, we saw the release of the much anticipated Unwoven, the second in the Tethers trilogy.  Here the lovely author Jack Croxall talks to us about the series, his other books, X and Wye and everything in between.

For those that haven’t read them can you describe what Tethers and Unwoven are about?

Of course! Tethers is a Victorian fantasy, steampunk-y, YA-y and adventure-y series set in rural England. It follows two teenagers, Karl and Esther, across three books as they become embroiled in a conspiracy involving various otherworldly artefacts and a whole host of sinister characters. The first two books (Tethers and Unwoven) deal with themes of fate, grief and obsession.

There has much excitement about the release of Unwoven, did you feel a lot of pressure writing the second book in the series?

Not really during the writing, I was never going to change my plan – I was more worried upon actually releasing the book. Thankfully people seem happy with the darker turn the second book has taken though.

Unwoven Cover SmallI love the cover of Unwoven, what made you go with that design?

Thanks! The cover is the lighthouse at the edge of an island Karl and Esther visit. It’s supposed to be a kind of mystery as to why the lighthouse isn’t alight even though it’s night.

Who would you cast in the movie as Karl, Esther and Mr Cauldwell?

Unknowns!

Can you give us any teasers or information about Torn, the third in the Tethers series?

Well Torn is the finale and I can say that, as well as the main cast, a few old favourites return for the last hurrah. It’s written from multiple viewpoints (not just Karl’s) too so a lot more will be revealed about certain characters.

You’ve also written X a brilliant zombie short story and are currently writing Wye a full length story that follows on from X, should we expect a Z at some point in the future?

I’m not sure. Wye is only the working title for my zombie novel, and I’ve now decided to make it virtually unrelated to X (although it takes place in the same world) so it can be read as a standalone. There might just be a few Easter eggs for anyone who’s read the short story first however.

What is it about Zombies that appeals when writing stories?

They’re everything we’re scared of becoming. Plus it’s really handy that there would be an almost endless supply of them if the Z apocalypse ever happens!

You have a brilliant sense of humour, would you ever write comedy in the future, perhaps even a ZomCom?

That’s a really nice thing to say, thank you! I don’t think so though, I love a good comedy moment but writing a whole comedy book isn’t something I can see myself doing.

Are there any other genres you would like to write or would never write?

I’d like to do a thriller, maybe a crime-y one. I actually have one on the backburner – it’s currently called Vermillion City.

If you had to endure a zombie invasion, what are your top 5 rules/tips to survive?

I’ve worried about this ever since I can remember so of course I have 5 tips for you!

1: Stay out of cities at all costs. They’re too cramped and will no doubt be infested with undead citizens. Plus, what happens if you see someone you know?!

2: Learn how to use a silent weapon; knife, bow, sword – noise means notice!!

3: Learn to live off the land where possible, tinned food will run out, fish, berries, rabbits and fruit probably won’t. You’ll end up with a super-hot bod too 😉

4: Find a secluded residence and fortify it; zoms just love to turn up uninvited.

5: NEVER go into one of the following places: tunnel, fairground, zoo, attic, school, hairdressers. You won’t even make it through to act two otherwise.

Zombies favourite food is brains, I just need to check you’ve not been attacked by zombies and had your brain devoured so here are some quick fire questions:

Write the alphabet backwards?

Erm … Z,Y,X,W … skip a few … A!

Hmmmm.    What is 100 x 1000?

Easy! Just add the zeros together: 100000

What is the capital of Australia?

Not Sydney or Melbourne. As an aficionado of pub quizzes I know it’s in fact Canberra.

What is the only manmade object you can see from space?

Oo, that’s a tough one! Is it one of those mega satellite dishes in Chile perhaps?

It’s actually the pyramids.

Have you ever eaten brains?

When I was a little kid I apparently ate a beetle whole, they have brains so I would have to answer yes!

Thanks so much for taking part in this interview Jack, but as some of your answers were not entirely correct and with your obvious liking for brains, I will be keeping an eye on you.

Here is my review of the brilliant Unwoven with buy links at the end.

First off, let me start by saying that Jack is one of those incredible writers who paints the most vivid descriptions with his words.  The settings, the people, the clothes, the trains, they all get this glorious descriptive treatment that allows you to picture it all so clearly.  His writing makes me look at my own words and think they lie flat in comparison.  I love the world that Jack creates, with his gorgeous style.  He completely sucks you in, so you soon find yourself fighting alongside Esther or cheering on Karl as he saves Esther from a fray. The characters are vivid, tangible creations that I completely fell in love with all over again.  They’ve matured here in the second book but this just made me love them all the more.  Esther is still feisty, brave and completely fearless and I love her for that

The action starts straight away too with the death of a character from the previous book. Something horrible happens with the arrival of some strange men in the village of Shraye and this starts our heroes on another exciting adventure.  Sorry If I’m being vague here, but I don’t want to give anything away, because Unwoven really is a story you need to read yourself.  We meet some great new characters in this book and Unwoven certainly didn’t lack anything with the characters that died in the previous book

The action just didn’t stop all the way through, it was a fast paced, action packed, completely riveting ride to the end.  I literally did not move from my bed whilst I read it cover to cover in one exciting, glorious sitting. I found myself screaming with frustration when it came to an end as I was desperate to read more of their adventure and we are left teetering on the brink of one hell of a cliffhanger.

I cannot wait for book three in the Tethers trilogy, Torn because I firmly believe it will be a spectacular crescendo to a wonderful story.

Unwoven

Tethers Cover (1)Unwoven is the sequel to the best-selling adventure novel, Tethers by the incredibly talented Jack Croxall.  I absolutely loved Tethers when I read it back in August.  I gobbled up the adventures of Karl and Esther in one sitting, so I was gutted that I would have to wait to find out what happened next for our young protagonists.

Jack has been teasing us for months with tasters, newspaper articles and snippets of the forthcoming Unwoven and I’ve gorged hungrily on all of them, desperate for more Tethers action.

Unwoven Cover SmallFinally Unwoven is here with its gorgeous cover being released on the world in the last few days and the book itself released today!!!!

Here’s the blurb: Almost eighteen months on from the terrible events of Halholham and so much has changed.

Karl and Esther no longer speak to one another and Mr Cauldwell has been ostracised by Shraye and its fickle residents. But the trio will not be parted for much longer because a shadow is growing in the west, a shadow which will reunite them in the name of all they have lost.

I’ve been fortunate enough to get an ARC of this book and everything else just stopped as soon as it landed in my inbox.  I’ve waited a long time for this and it definitely didn’t disappoint.

Fanfiction competition winner

I was thrilled with how many of you took The Sentinel into your hearts and took part in the fan fiction competition.  My two favourites are in the previous post, Kirsty Maclennan and Erin McEwan did a fantastic job.

But the winner was Megan from http://readinginthesunshine.wordpress.com/ who actually made me cry with this beautiful scene. I think she fell in love with Seth and Eve as much as I did.

This was it. Our final night had come sooner than any of us had expected. Persia had given us the news we’d been dreading a week ago, the shock on all of all of our faces was evident as she told us of the vision she’d seen. “It will happen a week from now” she said in a steady voice, “The final battle is coming, we all need to be ready.” What had followed would have been chaos if it hadn’t been for Eli – strong, organised Eli who I think had been preparing his whole life for this one moment. Within the hour Eli had drawn up plans, organised heavier training schedules, and increased security around me, just in case. The Guardians were frightened, I knew it, but they never let it show and instead threw themselves into preparing themselves for what would be the toughest day of them all. Quinn never left my side, and for that I was always grateful. We were all uncertain of what would happen, whether I’d be able to fulfil my destiny, and to have the familiarity of someone who I’d grown up with all my life helped to calm me. Eli had given us the night before off, to rest and to prepare ourselves for the day ahead. We were in a safe house, and the outer community were standing guard in a chain around the perimeter – it almost felt as though we were in a bubble, cut off from the outside world.

I thought of all the friends I had made, the bonds I had formed, and how that could all be ripped away from me in an instant tomorrow. Eli, Lucas, Persia, Quinn…my dear Quinn who I loved so much, and Seth, what would become of Seth and I? I rarely cry, but tonight I cried for Seth and I. For the strength of our love, for the uncertainty of what would come tomorrow and for the future together we both long for so much but may never see.

Seth had been gone for a few hours, but he found me sitting on the roof like I used to do as a child. He came up behind me and wrapped his arms around me, warming my bones against the cold air. We didn’t say anything to each other but we didn’t need to, to have him there was enough. I would’ve given almost anything to pause ourselves in time, to freeze that one moment, and have Seth holding on to me under the diamond sky for all eternity.

“I’ve got something to show you” he whispered to me.

fairy-lightsSeth led me by the hand into the garden, and I let out a gasp as I saw the scene before me. A path of rose petals led to an area lit by candles and tealights, there were even fairy lights hanging from the trees, filling me with warmth and butterflies in my stomach at the same time. I turned to Seth.

“You did all this?”

“Well, I had some help from Quinn, he wanted to put a smile on your face” I looked over to where Quinn was standing with a hopeful look on his face, and I beamed back at him.

“Eve…I was going to do this later but I think if I wait any longer I’m going to burst!” Still holding my hand, Seth took a big breath then sunk on to one knee. My breath caught in my chest and time seemed to stand still as I waited for his next words.

“Eve…my Evie…You are everything to me. Forget all this Sentinel stuff, forget the prophecies, even if you were just normal Eve without this destiny ahead of you, I would still love you with everything I have, with everything that I am. I love you for you. I love the way your hair blows in the wind, I love the way your eyes sparkle in the sunlight, the way you smile in your sleep sometimes when I’m holding you.”

Seth reached into his pocket and pulled out a beautiful gold ring. “This was your mother’s ring. Quinn didn’t tell you about this because before she died, she sat him down and she entrusted this to him. She told him that there would come a time when you would connect with someone stronger than any other, that there would be so much love that it radiated from you like sunshine, and everyone would know that you had found your one true soulmate. And when that time came, Quinn would know. Yesterday he came to me and he gave me your mother’s ring. And tonight I feel it’s the right time, I want you to know how dedicated I am to you, how devoted I am to you. You are so special to me, I knew from the instant I met you that I would love you for all of my life. I feel as though we are two halves of a whole, and Eve I promise to treat you like you’re the most precious treasure on earth, I promise to remain by your side through the good times and the bad, and to catch you any time you fall. But most of all, I promise to love you with everything I have. If this is our last night together, then I want it to be perfect. Evie…will you marry me?”

My eyes filled with tears as I whispered “Yes, oh Seth I will!”

Seth broke into a huge grin, picked me up and spun me around in circles, and as everything around us blurred all I could see was Seth’s smiling face. In the background I could hear Quinn whooping with delight, and as Seth lowered me back to the ground I even saw Eli smile over at us. By then Seth and I were a mixture of tears and laughter, and as he kissed me I knew nothing could spoil this. This was ours, and no matter what happened tomorrow, this beautiful moment could never be taken away from us.

Thank you so much Megan for writing this and Congratulations, you’ve won £10 amazon vouchers.

fan fiction competition

I’ve had quite a few entries into the fan fiction competition so far and I’m so thrilled that you guys have embraced The Sentinel in this way.

There’s still time to enter, the deadline is 31st December and the winner will be announced on New Years Day.

https://thesentinelseries.wordpress.com/2013/12/14/competition-time/

In the meantime, here are two of my favourite entries so far.

The first one is by Erin McEwan

The Dream

Seth wandered over to me offering a smile and sliding his hand round my waist. I smiled up to him in return as he pressed his lips to my forehead.

Our two beautiful children Quinn Jnr and Sephy were chasing each other across the sand with Art and Ellie, Eli and Alexandria’s children.

We were standing on my beach in Mexico. Not much had changed in the ten years since I had first pulled myself here. The sun was bearing down on us but our children were running around too quickly to notice, carefree. I had ensured that.

Their squeals of delight rang out across the air as it breezed in our direction. I couldn’t imagine having a happier life than the way it is now, realising that everything that happened had to have happened to create this future for us. Eli, my ever over protective guardian had insisted that he and Alexandria join us on our trip, not that I minded. Alexandria and I had a special bond.

I looked over at them, Eli had a smile playing at the corner of his mouth, his hand squeezing Alexandria’s as they both watched the kids. I smiled to myself. They taught me how to save the world; I taught them how to love.

I woke with a start, but relaxed again when I felt Seth next to me. His warmth seeping into my limbs. It wasn’t the first time I had had that dream. I couldn’t seem to stop myself envisioning our future even though I still had our present to save.

  ******

The next entry is by Kirsty Maclennan, from Quinn’s point of view.

It’s great seeing the love that Seth has for Eve, I know that he would never hurt her intentionally and as someone very close to Eve, that’s all I’ve ever wanted for her.
She has so much going on in her life and I feel reassured knowing that she’s someone to confide in, to cuddle up to and most importantly, to love.

But seeing her happy and loved up, only makes me look at my life and think of the one that got a way.
In truth, my role in Eve’s life meant I hadn’t got the time for anything more, it was hard living as a dog and trying to keep up my life as well.
For two months, I fought to have it all, protect Eve, attend university and hold down a relationship, but then I had to admit defeat and when I called it a day and she accused me of having another women, I couldn’t deny it. How could I explain my role in Eve’s life, when Eve didn’t even know who I was.

I remember the day I met her in the library, she was stood with the biggest stack of books, trying to calculate if she could take them all out.
She stood stroking their binds lovingly, as if books were the best thing in the world.
I must have stood staring at her because she turned around aware of my gaze, as her green eyes met mine, I felt my stomach flip!
“I think you will find you are over you book limit there” I could’ve hit myself at such a stupid line, I might as well of said ‘is your dad called Jacob? Cause you are a cracker’
She stared at me and smiled “I know, I’m trying to decide which ones to put back, but I feel as if I’ve toyed with their emotions, taking them off the shelves and then not taking them on an adventure to the outside. I suppose you think I’m crazy, I often hear that on twitter but I can’t help it, books bring me so much joy, I can’t help thinking that they have feelings too”
I gulped oh wow, who was I to think her crazy, after all I sleep as a dog every night!
“I love that, I’ve never thought about a book like that before, I will be much more gentler with them in future. I’m Quinn by the way”
She pulled her blonde hair to one side, held out her hand and replied “Hi I’m Kirsty, pleased to meet you Quinn” as my hand touched hers, I felt my skin burn, there was something special about her,  something different.

Every time I look at a book, I think of her, I wish I could see her again and explain.
But then I would risk her life and I care for her too much, I would never risk her safety!

“Quinn, Quinn” I look round at Eve, “You were in a trance then, what’s with the goofy look?”
I look at Eve, ” I was just thinking of paying a trip to the library”
